RoBIM Survey

How-To

0. Introduction

RoBIM Survey is a simulation tool for individuals or educational institutions to experience the surveying processes. Users can gain surveying skills through a game-based interface without accessing real equipment. It now provides two major instruments that are commonly used in the field: level & total station. This How-To manual will include (1) the introduction of the user interface, (2) the basic operation in the game environment, (3) detailed operations of each device contained in the virtual environment.

0. Introduction

1. User Interface

1.1. Main Interface

RoBIM Survey is a First Person View (FPV) based simulator. The main interface includes four major components: main view, centre pointer, hint panel, and mini map. The main view shows the 3D environment in the simulator. The centre pointer is a "+" shape that is fixed on the centre of your screen. When the centre pointer hovers on a controllable object (e.g., equipment, tripod, ground surface, etc.), a hint panel with operation instructions will pop out on the right bottom corner.

1.2. Control Mode Interface

When you enter the control mode for the instrument (i.e., level or total station), the interface will show the simulated view of the instrument. Similar to the main interface, the upright corner will have a mini map, and the bottom right corner will have a hint panel listing detailed instructions. A measurement panel will be at the bottom left corner to show the measurement results, such as instrument height, zenith angle (total station only), horizontal angle (total station only), distance to the prism (total station only).

2. Basic Operations

3. Advanced Operations

Arrange surveying points

You can add markers on the ground to arrange your planned surveying points. To do that, use the mouse to let the centre pointer point to the ground and right click the mouse. When you place the equipment near the mark, it will automatically be placed in the centre of the marker.

Add collimation errors to the level

The default setting of the RoBIM Survey assumes that all equipment has been calibrated. To practice the calibration process (e.g., two-peg test) of the level, you can press button in the control mode interface. (Notice: the values of the errors may be different when you relaunch the simulator)

Save & load the scene

RoBIM Survey allows you to save and open the arranged scene, including the positions of the equipment and placed markers. To do that, press ESC to open the main menu. Then, you can save the scene as a .scene file. You can also share the saved scene with your teammates (instructors) for peer collaborations (reviews).
